Dr. Subidh Ali’s primary research interest is in side-channel cryptanalysis. When a cipher (encryption/decryption algorithm) is executed in an integrated chip, it leaks secret information through covert channels such as electromagnetic and thermal emanation, fault propagation, and power consumption. An attacker can tap these covert channels and leak the secret information embedded in a chip. In this domain, Dr. Ali has developed state-of-the-art fault-based side-channel attacks on universally standard symmetric key cipher AES. He has also developed a new class of scan-based side-channel attacks, referred to as Test-Mode-Only (TMO) scan attack. His research works in this domain are highly cited by the research community. Apart from side-channel analysis of ciphers, he also works on other hardware security aspects, such as security implications of emerging nano-technologies, such as Nano-Electro Mechanical Systems (NEMS) and Carbon Nano-Tube (CNT), Design for secure digital microfluidic biochips, hardware IP protection, etc. He has contributed to hardware security with 31 publications.
