Dr Anubhav Pradhan
Welcome to the Department of Liberal Arts at IIT Bhilai. The humanities and social sciences serve a vital function in completing the educational curve of students of technology, equipping them with deeper, more nuanced appreciation of the complex social processes within which all scientific endeavour is embedded. This is all the more essential in our educational ecosystem today, so that the ossification of disciplinary silos can be progressively dismantled for a more robust cross-pollination of all branches of knowledge and learning. The Indian Institutes of Technology have always been at the forefront of this growing effort to bridge these disciplinary gaps, so that our graduates are more at ease in working through the challenges and opportunities of the world at large.
We are a cohort of scholars and practitioners working across research interests in economics, literature, and psychology. The department offers institute core (IC) as well as elective (LA) courses to undergraduate students at the institute. Core courses are in communication and finance respectively and are compulsory for all undergraduate students, while elective courses are more varied in scope and may be taken by students all through their four years in the BTech degree programme. The department also offers non-graded (LAN) courses on speaking and writing skills and professional ethics respectively to undergraduate students.
As a research department, our doctoral degree programme is our strength and stay. Our scholars come from different backgrounds and regions, committing themselves to the difficult life of research with a zest and adaptability which continues to surprise and motivate all of us. The research which we are undertaking in this department aspires to be impactful and transformational, rooted as it is in the broader currents of our civilisational legacies and futures. We strive consistently to maintain an inclusive, ethical, and enabling workspace for all in this department, and are hopeful that our scholarship continues to bear marks of the values with which we are building this department.
